Free a Tree in Historic Barton Heights Cemeteries

Saturday, November 08 2025

Ivy and other climbing vines pose a major threat to trees, particularly mature ones. Removing or killing ivy on a public tree is easy and something we can do on our own time, preferably with a buddy! Learn about ivy and why it is problematic, how to properly and safely "free-a-tree." Barton Heights Cemeteries is a 12-acre assemblage of city-owned cemeteries that were originally founded by free African Americans in 1815. They contain the earliest surviving African American memorials in the Richmond region and possibly all of Virginia.

Wear long pants & long sleeves, gloves and eye protection. Bring water, hand pruners, a soil knife or small hand saw if you have them.

Location: Barton Heights Cemeteries, 1600 Lamb Avenue. Park on the neighboring streets, we will work on three large trees in the open area near Tybee Avenue.
