Join CESAR for a Naloxone and Harm Reduction 101 training and teach in. This training will walk you through both how to administer and receive Naloxone, the importance and meaning of the Good Samaritan Act, and a brief teach-in on why harm reduction is a life-affirming and saving act. Whether this is your introduction to harm reduction or your 100th workshop, we hope this will be an accessible learning environment for all attendees.
What is Naloxone?
Naloxone is a safe medication that reverses the signs of opioid overdose by blocking the effects of opioids in the brain. In Canada naloxone is available in intramuscular (i.e., injectable) and intranasal (i.e., nasal spray) formulations. Naloxone reverses the effects of opioids including heroin, fentanyl, morphine, methadone, codeine, oxycodone and many others. Naloxone can be given by a spray into the nose or by an injection into the muscle. Naloxone can take between 2 – 5 minutes to work, can last in the body for up to 2 hours and cause withdrawal symptoms.
Please note: Naloxone kits will not be provided but can be obtained at most Shopper’s Drug Marts, pharmacies and certain community centres that provide kits.
