Chico Stewards: Restoration & Nature EducationChico Stewards is a City-supported volunteer stewardship program focused on caring for Chico’s parks and natural areas through organized clean-up, light restoration activities, and environmental education. The program provides community members with opportunities to contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of public lands while learning about local ecology.Each event includes a brief educational component paired with hands-on volunteer work such as litter removal, invasive plant management (as directed by City staff), and basic habitat stewardship activities. All activities are coordinated in alignment with City guidelines and site-specific management goals.The program is led by Oscar Rodriguez, a Certified Naturalist Educator with training in Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) approaches. Educational content emphasizes place-based learning, environmental awareness, and responsible stewardship, while recognizing Indigenous knowledge systems as an important part of understanding local ecosystems.Chico Stewards is designed to be inclusive and accessible. No prior experience is required, and all necessary instruction and safety guidance are provided on site. Activities are suitable for volunteers interested in learning more about Chico’s natural spaces while contributing positively to their care.Tools and gloves are provided, but please bring them if possible. Please wear sturdy shoes and long pants. Bring water, snacks and sun protection. Rain cancels the event. Your RSVP acknowledges that you have read, understand and agree to the terms as described in the attached City of Chico release of liability. Participants under the age of 18 are required to have a guardian complete the attached volunteer application and submit before the event.
