Second Saturday RIP in Grandma’s Creek Park

Saturday, June 14 2025

Help get rid of the invasive plants in Grandma’s Creek Park, an arm of Glencarlyn Park that extends into the Barcroft neighborhood in South Arlington. This month, we will be working on the west side of the park, at the end of 6th St S, in the area where we planted 38 trees and shrubs in March. Our primary task will be to check whether the deer cages are in good positions surrounding the new plantings, and adjust the cage positions if necessary. We may also remove other plants growing within the cage, if they are crowding out the plantings. If time allows, after the cages have all been checked, we will see how the live stakes planted along the run-off stream from 6th St S are faring. We can also remove invasive plants in the general area, such as English ivy. There is a lot of poison ivy in this area, so please dress to protect yourself from contact. I have preventive and post-contact wipes provided by DPR, if you are particularly sensitive, and want to protect your face and any other exposed skin. Some tools and gloves given to us by DPR are available to use if you don’t have your own. If you need directions to find the end of 6th St S, please use this address to get them: 4729 6th St S, Arlington, VA 22204.
