Erwin Park Map Kiosk & Restoration Project

Project Overview

This Eagle Scout Service Project, led by Andi Boldt of BSA Troop 261 (Plano), focused on the expansion and preservation of the informational signage infrastructure at Erwin Park. Andi oversaw the construction and installation of a new informational map kiosk, designed as a direct replica of the existing structures to maintain architectural continuity within the park. To ensure a high standard of durability, the project included a comprehensive restoration phase where Andi refinished the two existing kiosks with fresh paint and inspected their structural footings, reinforcing her technical understanding of the build requirements before completing the new installation.

1) Initial Inspection & Structural Analysis: Structural Assessment of Existing Infrastructure. Conduct a comprehensive physical inspection of the two existing park kiosks to evaluate their structural integrity, analyze the original framing design, and catalog specific repair requirements.

2) Remediation & Preparation: Subsurface Footing Remediation. Expose and repair identified structural footing deficiencies on the two existing kiosks to stabilize the upright supports, mitigate ground-contact wear, and ensure long-term structural durability.

3) New Fabrication & Installation: Replication and Installation of New Kiosk. Construct and install one (1) new map kiosk designed as an exact replica of the original structures. The unit will be permanently set in concrete footings at the precise site designated by the project beneficiary near the Hilltop Pavilion.

4) Aesthetic Integration & Protection: Surface Refinishing and Protective Coating Application. Prep, prime, and paint the new kiosk alongside the two existing units using the standardized "Park Brown" protective exterior paint. This ensures cohesive blending with adjacent park assets, such as the open signs and firewood kiosks.

5) Project Closeout & Handover: Final Asset Handover and Beneficiary Review. Present the completed project to the beneficiary for final quality assurance inspection and formally transfer operational control, including the delivery of security lock codes for the display cases.

Execution & Leadership

The project spanned several months of dedicated planning and active site execution, beginning on November 8, 2025, and reaching successful completion on March 15, 2026. Andi demonstrated strong leadership and logistical coordination by managing a workforce of volunteers consisting of BSA youth members and adults (including registered leaders and parents). She effectively guided her team through complex construction milestones, including the precision handling of heavy timber structures and the pouring of concrete footings to ensure the new kiosk remains a permanent, stable asset for park visitors.

Service Impact & Resource Valuation

The addition of the new kiosk improves the park's ability to communicate trail maps, safety notices, and event details to trail users, while the maintenance phase directly extends the lifespan of existing park assets. The total economic impact of Andi’s project reflects a substantial contribution to the City of McKinney’s park infrastructure, detailed below:

Category Details

 Total Volunteer Force 6 Individuals

Total Labor Investment 74 Service Hours

Direct Financial Contributions / Materials $1,238.00

 Volunteer Labor Value ($33.00/hr) $2,442.00

 Total Project Valuation $3,680.00

Conclusion

The Erwin Park Map Kiosk & Restoration Project has delivered a lasting structural and aesthetic improvement to the McKinney community. By masterfully executing a strategy that paired restorative maintenance with new fabrication, Andi ensured a superior final build quality that enhances the park's overall utility. The new and restored kiosks stand fully completed and ready to serve trail users for years to come.
