About
By creating a volunteer profile, you are signing the following UC Law SF Pro Bono Pledge:
JD students who perform a minimum of 45 hours of volunteer services to under-represented individuals or communities over the course of their three years at UC Law SF will be inducted in the Pro Bono Society and recognized for their achievement at graduation and on their transcript.* Those who complete at least 150 hours will receive recognition for Outstanding Achievement in Pro Bono. LLM, MSL, and JD Transfer students can also pledge with numbers that reflect their time at UC Law SF (15 or 50 hours for each year of law school).
This pledge honors the California State Bar and ABA’s encouragement for all attorneys to devote time annually to pro bono service to ensure the promise of “justice for all” is a reality. At UC Law SF, we believe this commitment to the delivery of legal services is an integral and intensely satisfying part of your legal education and enhances the development of your professional identity.
In pursuit of these goals, I pledge to provide a minimum of 45 hours of service to or on behalf of under-represented individuals or communities prior to my graduation from UC Law SF.* I understand that in order to qualify for recognition through the Pro Bono Program, hours completed towards my pro bono goal must meet the following criteria: 1) benefit under-represented individuals or communities; 2) use legal skills; 3) be supervised by an attorney; 4) neither monetary compensation nor academic credit shall be received; and 5) be performed through organizations approved by the Director of the Pro Bono Program.
*There is no penalty if you do not meet the goals. Hours requirements are pro-rated for other programs/circumstances: transfer, LLM, & MSL students are required to complete 15 hours for each year spent at UC Law SF.
**Please note that some of the pro bono opportunities available may request in-person participation. These are not UC Law SF programs and are instead third-party volunteer opportunities. Student participation is voluntary, and UC Law SF does not guarantee the health and safety conditions at any volunteer site.
