RISAW: Richmond Invasives Species Awareness Week

Richmond Invasive Species Awareness Week (RISAW) 2026 runs from February 22nd to February 28th, featuring a week-long series of volunteer removals, educational nature walks, and community events. Organized by the James River Park System Invasive Plant Task Force, the initiative aims to combat over 50 invasive plant species threatening local ecosystems, including events at Pony Pasture and Rogers Woods.
Key RISAW 2026 Events & Details:
Kickoff Event (Feb 22): Held at Pony Pasture, featuring invasive removal, guided walks with Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) staff, and the "RVA Goats".
Volunteer Opportunities: Daily events focusing on removing invasive vines, shrubs, and ground cover to restore native biodiversity.
Educational Programming: Includes discussions on aquatic invasive species at the James A. Buzzard River Education Center and other expert-led talks.
Celebration: The annual "Boogie for the Biosphere" party, featuring live music to celebrate restoration efforts.
Impacted Areas & Species: The effort targets over 50 invasive plants, such as English ivy, Chinese privet, Japanese honeysuckle, and Tree of Heaven, which threaten trees, water quality, and native wildlife in the James River Park System.
