Trail Building at Lake Fairfax

Sunday, November 06 2016

Now that the pump track is on the ground, it's time to get busy on creating the new trail that will connect our new trailhead to the existing trail network. The flag line for Trail #13 has been approved and promises to be a whole lot of fun. We'll be winding through and over trees in this beautiful section of woods and, of course, we've found some fun rocky bits to play with, as well. This is going to be a half-mile of trail that you're definitely going to want to include in your weekly rides. Depending on how many folks come out, I expect this trail to take four good workdays to complete, so if you can't make one or two, you'll still have a chance to scratch your initials in the park.
Our philosophy at LFP is that trail work should be fun, just like the trails we build. So bring your bike, your favorite workday refreshments, and anything you want to be comfortable in the woods. We'll contribute a little something every day and hope to save enough energy at the end of the day to ride the trails or the new pump track. And, of course, bring your family and friends, whether they ride a bike or not! The more the merrier!

When: Sunday, Nov 6th, start at 9am and end at 3pm

Where: Meet at the Pumptrack. (Enter the park at 1400 Lake Fairfax Dr, Reston, and stay on the paved road, follow signs for the athletic fields. Once you get to the soccer fields, turn left and you're there.)

What: The first day we'll be clearing most of the corridor and as soon as that's done we'll get on with cutting the tread. As is good practice in trail building, we'll save the three entry points of this trail for the last day, so people don't end up finding a dead-end trail.

Wear: Sturdy boots or shoes, gloves, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty, appropriate for the weather. Long pants and sleeves may be a good idea for working around the thorns on clearing days, which will most likely be the first and last days of the project.

Bring: Water and food to sustain you through the day. Just like on long rides, you'll stay stronger if you keep fueling while you work. All necessary tools will be provided, but if you have a favorite shovel, hard rake, hedge trimmers, or anything to cut the briars with, feel free to bring them!

Post-work: I will bring a couple coolers with ice and snacks and/or some pizza or other more substantial food for the post-work hang time. Bring your bike to get a ride in or just pop a top and admire your handiwork.

If you need to contact me by phone, 703-217-1033. Hope to see you all there!
