Event Description:
Your degree doesn’t determine your career; your experiences do. Students often think they need the “right” degree or lots of experience before they are career-ready. This session challenges that idea by showing how skills gained through classes, clubs, volunteering, and networking through campus involvement are transferable across industries. This session will show incoming TMU students how to recognize and build transferable skills using STAR statements that specifically target their impact in the industry. Using examples from my own experience as a third-year History student, I'll share how attending a Toronto Archives tour connected me with professionals in the archival field, which later led me to attend a History Students' Association career panel and ultimately a volunteer role with the Canada Black Music Archives. This experience will highlight how networking, communication, initiative, relationship-building, and professionalism can help create opportunities beyond the classroom, turning everyday university experiences into skills for the future.
Facilitator Bio:
My name is Eleni Ellinas, and I am a third-year History Student at Toronto Metropolitan University. I am interested in archival education. As someone with accommodations, being a part-time student in the summer helps me stay more flexible throughout the year and is an important resource to use for a positive university experience.
What is a Skills Share Series?
The above event is part of TMAPS' Skills Share Series called Do a Workshop with TMAPS! This series is designed for students who are interested in leading and facilitating creative and entrepreneurial focused events on campus. This series provides students with the opportunity to develop leadership, communication, and event facilitation skills while learning how to create engaging spaces for creativity, networking, and community building. Whether you are an aspiring entrepreneur, creative, and/or emerging leader, this workshop series is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience and connect with like-minded students. Past workshops included: Pranayama Breathwork and Chair Yoga with Swapna Mathew and Paper Quilling with Khansa Sayyada!
