Night at the Museum

Here's your chance to experience the Ohio History Center museum after hours and see whether our exhibits really do come to life! This family event promises to entertain children and adults alike. Dozens of different characters will be roaming the museum, and you can learn all about their unique place in Ohio history. We ask all costumed characters at to present at 5:15pm for a brief pre-event meeting on the red carpet.

Schedule of Events:
5:15pm - character meeting on the red carpet
5:30pm - all volunteers in place
6-7pm - event starts with members preview
6-9pm - event occurs
8:30-9pm - Dance party at the red carpet
9-9:30pm - clean up

Roles requested: Costumed Characters, Handing out Autograph Booklets, Coat Check, Hands-on Activities

Space Program Misson Control

This role helps guide Greg Brown from Armstrong Air& Space, who is dressed as the astronaut, around the museum and also provides interpretation about the space program.

18th century Ohio frontier explorers

These roles will roam the museum floor but will be based in Nature of Ohio. Their primary role will discuss the beaver hunting trade and try to exchange goods at their trading post.

Trolley Car Operator

The trolley car operator asks visitors for their tickets to ride the trolley car in Gallery 3.

Ohio Bell Linesman

The linesman is a hardworking but stressed worker. The linesman might ask visitors for help on his job. He also works closely with the switchboard operator and is stationed next to the Ohio Bell truck near the red-carpet steps.

Ohio Bell Switchboard Operator

The operator works closely with the linesman. They have a switchboard set up on the museum floor. They will try to recruit visitors to help ask the linesman what is taking his repairs so long.

Loom Weavers (experience with the Loom required)

Costume for this station can be 19th century. Barn loom weavers will work on a piece in Gallery 2 while visitors stop by to watch. They may even recruit visitors to help with some weaving.

Annie Oakley

Annie will roam the museum and drum up business for her wild west show.

1860’s Ohio homestead

These volunteers will be stationed in the log cabin area. They have chores that need to be done and can recruit young visitors to help them. They can also interact heavily with the Civil War interpreters.

1950’s Lustron Family

These volunteers replace the wooden cutouts that are usually in front of the Lustron home.

Tuskegee Airman

This airman will roam the museum floor in his leather flight jacket, cap and silk scarf.

WWII Victory Garden posters

Victory Garden posters will wear 1940’s attire and carry cutouts of propaganda posters. They can help recruit for the war effort both on the homefront and the battle front.

Museum Security Guards

Museum security guards know that the exhibits come to life after dark. They just try to keep order in the chaos. They will roam the entire museum and make sure the exhibits aren’t acting too wild or try to escape.

Living paintings

Living paintings are stationary inside of their frames and spend a lot of time bickering with each other on who is the most famous painting.

The cheerleaders cheer for the buckeyes near the 57 Bel air. they recruit nearby visitors to join them in the cheering.
