Barrier Island Botanist (BIB)

Thursday, October 02 2025

The Barrier Island Botanists (BIB) program is an all outdoor field trip for Brunswick County 6th grade students. It is focused on botany in order to align with North Carolina’s educational standards for 6th grade.

60 students are brought over to the island on each trip, divided into three groups and rotate visiting three stations (Coastal Dune (Access 5), Salt Marsh (Marina Park) and Maritime Forest (Bald Head Association)).

Volunteers assist groups at each station and assist with walking groups between stations. This is all outdoors and is roughly a mile of walking. Please wear appropriate shoes, hat and water bottle. There will be time for lunch at the beginning of the field trip so please bring a packed lunch and/or snacks and water!
