Truancy Intervention Project: Help Develop Fulton County’s Student Attendance and School Climate Protocol

Friday, November 17 2023

Project Description:
Georgia law requires every county to develop a protocol for handling student attendance and recommendations for fostering positive school climate. A committee of school officials, Juvenile and Superior Court representatives, community partners, and law enforcement are responsible for drafting and revising the protocol regularly.

Fulton County has recently convened its Student Attendance and School Climate Protocol Committee (SASCP Committee) to begin revising the existing protocol. The Committee co-chairs, who are staff of Truancy Intervention Project and the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, are looking for assistance with some legal research to support the efforts of the Committee. Specifically, we would like to update the ordinances and statutes referenced in the current protocol and locate similar protocols from other counties in Georgia.

The student(s) completing this project would also be welcome to attend SASCP Committee meetings and subcommittee working sessions. The SASCP Committee includes Juvenile Court Judges, school district officials, and representatives from various community-serving organizations. This is a great learning and networking opportunity for a student interested in Juvenile Law, Education Law, or working to eliminate the school-to-prison pipeline.

This project can be done remotely and is estimated to take 10-15 hours. It must be completed by the end of January, but the Truancy Intervention Project will keep volunteers will establish a clearer timeline.
