As osteopathic student doctors, we need to realize that medicine is not just about treating patients – sometimes, it is about caring for patients and offering all the support we can. Continuous reinforcement of compassion and empathy is needed to develop this attitude. The 'Smile for Seniors' is an excellent opportunity to sharpen these skills while providing companionship and entertainment for the elderly at the Gardens of Somerset facility.

The Gardens of Somerset, an 18-acre community located in Sterlington, LA, is designed to bring unparalleled living options to Ouachita Parish for older adults. Centered around outstanding architecture, The Gardens of Somerset will offer community members independent living, assisted living and memory care and a lifestyle focused on the things they love and cherish such as gardening, the culinary arts, exercise, and family.

With the passion for "To Help Others" that brought us to VCOM, let us join hands to take care of our elderly!

Volunteers are asked not to volunteer if any of the below apply:

If you (or someone in your household) are experiencing flu-like symptoms (defined by coughing, fever, respiratory symptoms or stomach virus symptoms or have had these symptoms recently.

If you knowingly have had contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19 within the past 10 days, or a person who was experiencing flu like symptoms within the past 10 days.

If you aren’t feeling well, have a cough or fever, please stay home and contact us after you’re feeling better to reschedule.

Dress Code: Wear a VCOM t-shirt or polo with comfortable pants (no shorts) and closed-toe shoes.

Note: Lunch available at the facility for $5 for volunteers. Please inform Kiran at least 2 days before the shift to communicate with the facility.
