Day of Mourning & Giving Thanks
Thursday, November 28 2024
For this Day of Mourning and Giving Thanks, we invite you to fast in solidarity with indigenous people. At 12pm, we welcome everyone to stop meal prep and observe the Day of Mourning from 12pm - 1pm, which will be live-streaming from Plymouth. At 1pm, we will break the fast and begin serving the food to our community.
An annual tradition since 1970, Indigenous people & their allies have gathered at noon in Plymouth Massachusetts to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the US Thanksgiving holiday. Many Native people do not celebrate the arrival of European settlers. Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands and the erasure of Native cultures.
The National Day of Mourning is a time to honor Indigenous ancestors and Native resilience. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection, as well as a protest against the racism and oppression that Indigenous people continue to experience worldwide. Many supporters fast from sundown the day before through the afternoon of this day.
