Birthday Bash: Lower Yahi Trail Plant Hike

Thursday, June 05 2025

Join naturalist Jon Aull for a slow, leisurely stroll along the banks of Big Chico Creek. The Yahi Trail, established by the Sierra Club Yahi Group (now Blue Oak group), is the premiere hiking trail in Chico. We’ll do the lower part to Bear Hole/Diversion Dam, a shady walk through old growth riparian forest to the spectacular frozen lava of Iron Canyon. Riparian habitats are our most diverse inland ecosystems, and with nearly 1,000 species of plants documented in Bidwell Park, we should have plenty to look at and talk about. In addition to the usual lush and varied plant life, we have been finding higher elevation plants that have washed down with the voluminous sediment after the Park Fire, so we may see some ephemeral oddballs that may not be seen here for another 25 years.
Wear sturdy footwear suitable for rocky terrain, and be prepared to take advantage of opportunities to wade/swim in the creek as it may w be hot. The walk will be about 4 miles with slight elevation gain. Bring water and any personal items you need.
Your RSVP to this event acknowledges that you have read, understand and agree to the terms as described in the attached City of Chico release of liability. Participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
