Portland Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry's mission is to manage and ensure Portland's urban forest infrastructure for current and future generations. Portland’s urban forest consists of 236,000 street trees, 1.2 million park trees, and innumerable private property trees. Urban Forestry is involved in managing or regulating all of these trees to differing degrees. Urban Forestry staff issue permits for planting, pruning, and removal of all public and some private trees and are on call 24/7 to respond to tree emergencies.

The crew leaders will guide event participants in the process of planting a new tree including digging and preparing the planting hole, prepping the rootball and uncovering the root flare, straightening and stabilizing tree, and finishing with mulch and stakes. Event participants may have little or no experience with planting trees, crew leaders will receive talking points to share about the planting process, what tools to use and how to use them, and safety and PPE.
In addition to the tree planting component of the celebration, assistance is needed for the event registration sign-in table, PPE & safety, free trees from Yard Tree Giveaway, and refreshments management. These positions are medium and low impact, with varied individual tasks.
