Northlake Nature Center : Walk in the Woods with Byron Almquist

Sunday, January 22 2023

Our next Walk in the Woods will be in the Northlake Nature Center just east of Mandeville on Sunday, January 22nd. (Originally scheduled for the 15th, the walk has been postponed one week.) The walk will be in two sessions – ten to noon and then 1 pm to 3 pm. Come for one or both with lunch on the trail. The route will be on several trails and paths which may be unfamiliar for most members. This walk will not duplicate earlier walks in the center of previous years.

Theme of the walk will be looking for “Early signs of spring”. Although this is midwinter, there are already some “eager beavers” who are showing some growths and even greenery. Also other species have yet to get their act together for the next season.

The leader, Byron Almquist, will have a list of species to be observed in the order that they will be encountered. Scattered during the walk will be oaks, perhaps five or more, a couple of elms, maples and even a hickory or two plus several uncommon species. The overall intent is to observe and identify the forested residents of this nature center. Hopefully the group can locate and identify perhaps twenty or more species.

If able to come, pls send Byron an email with your cell phone number. Send your reply only to Byron directly – not the entire mailing list. He will send Thursday night/Friday morning directions to the meeting site and more specifics about the walk. Participation in this venture will earn each educational hours for 2023.
