The Louisiana Iris Conservation Initiative (LICI) will be holding an iris planting volunteer event at Pelican Park Recreation District #1 in St. Tammany parish, near Mandeville, La. on Saturday, November 19th.
We'll work from 9 AM until noon or until all of the irises are planted, whichever comes first. This volunteer event is open to the public. Feel free to invite your friends.
Our plan is to invite other local groups to help out to make this iris planting a community event. LICI currently has six locations, most of which are public parks, where we plant rescued irises as a place for them to multiply on their own without any maintenance being needed. The blooming irises will be in view to the public, which furthers our goal of raising awareness of this wonderful native Louisiana plant. The plan is for the irises to safely grow for years and still be available to us to thin out for future projects. Pelican Park is the most recent location we have planted irises under this program. The I. giganticaerulea species iris from the LICI iris rescue program will be used for this planting.
Please bring your own long-handled shovel and your garden gloves. The site will be muddy, so its best to either wear regular rain boots or old shoes. Drinking water will be supplied. There are park bathrooms next to the planting site. The irises will be planted in a small wet area (shown in the photo) near the "Gold" complex parking lot. The road for the Gold Complex is on the left about 2/3's of the way back on the main entrance road.
