You may be interested in this opportunity this Sunday, May 22 scheduled by the “Land Trust for Louisiana”. Below are the details. The outing is to explore and experience the culture and scenery of the Baton Rouge side of the Maurepas Wetlands. This outing is a fund raiser for the Land Trust with the fee of $40 which includes the use of a canoe and accessories and the noon meal. Funds raised will be used to help restore the Manchac Land Bridge north of Laplace badly damaged by hurricane Ida.

The day’s plan is to launch from the modest settlement of Maurepas located on LA 22. We will paddle down a camp lined canal, then turn into a bayou lined with bottomland forest. Eventually to a hunting camp whose members serve as the custodians of the Land Trust Property. Once on land, members will serve a home cooked meal, most likely jambalaya, followed by talks with maps to educate all as to the wetlands. Birding is a major component of this outing as birders, Jane Patterson and Melanie Driscoll, will accompany the flotilla and speak after lunch about the importance of the wetlands for wildlife.

Perhaps this outing will count towards the yearly requirement of education hours. Forecast now for Sunday for the area is 83 for a high with 40% chance of rain. Bring your rain gear just in case.
