“Big Branch by Night & Red-cockaded Woodpeckers”

Friday, April 08 2022

Birding at night is a treat! Nocturnal birds-owls, night-herons, rails, bats and common nighthawks respond to your calls as well as frogs and other night creatures. We start early to see the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker as they return to their nests. The 12,000-acre Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge includes much of the vital marshes, shorelines and offshore grass beds along the Northshore. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries cooperatively manage Big Branch and refuge biologist have provided artificial nest boxes carved into live pines for nesting and roosting cavities. We continue along a boardwalk over grass beds and then to trails for easy access to the other habitats. We will have experienced bird guides to point out all the migrating birds as they pass our way! Free for Members of NNC! Become a member today and register. Contact rue@northlakenature.org or call 985-626-1238 to register early!
