Walk in the Park with Byron

Saturday, December 12 2020

LaFreniere Park in Metairie has at least 35 species – (possible 40) of trees with perhaps ten of them oaks. Plus scattered about are elms, maples, river birch, tupelos and more. Of special interest are one of a kind in the park -- a cottonwood, a southern catalpa and best of all one Chinese parasol and one Florida (southern sugar) maple.

We will meet at 1 pm this Saturday, December 12th to spend about three hours locating and then learning about trees in the park. During our observing, we will collect leaves from comparable species and then spend time at a pavilion making identification. An example of similar trees are oaks in the red group –nuttall (Texas red), Shumard, cherry bark and pin. We will try our best to determine which is which.

Trees are now approaching their winter setting which makes for opportunities that does not come in other seasons. On Saturday join our group of naturalists in zigzagging about LaFreniere seeking out every species in the park. A checklist and map will be provided to aid in the search.
