Avery Island and a Naturalist’s Drive down Historic Highway 90

Our trip docent will be David Bull, Fall 18 Bradburn Award winner, professional nature photographer, serious birder, and dedicated naturalist. He has been to the island many times during his 15 years living in rural Gibson. He hopes we will see snowy egrets nesting on the docks in the rookery, and the camellia forest in bloom. Because Highway 90 is prone to flooding, we will not travel in inclement weather.

This trip will require a pre-dawn departure and two meals on the road. Two CE hours will be earned on this excursion. Carpooling is encouraged.

Meeting place: Elmwood Shopping Center in front of the now-defunct K Mart at the lake end of the original shopping strip.

Meeting time: 6:15 am. Departure shortly thereafter.

Breakfast: 7:30ish. Morgan City or thereabouts.

Arrival: 10:00 am.

• Tour the Pepper Sauce Factory, and Museum
• Jungle Gardens and Rookery (if the egrets are there) with David’s commentary
• Free time to explore, bird watch, and photograph.

Fees: Jungle Gardens and the factory tour $12.50.
There is a 10% discount for seniors.

Lunch: 2:00 pm Cafe Jefferson in New Iberia (American, Cajun, Creole. Moderately priced)

Seven are already on the list...

Bonus: There is a small boardwalk at Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge about 10
minutes from Hwy 90 near Franklin that might be worth a stop. If people are interested
and there is time after lunch, we may add that little side trip.
