The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at the Southeast Louisiana National Wildlife Refuges and the Friends of Louisiana Wildlife Refuges, Inc. are partnering with the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation (LPBF) to hold its annual Beach Sweep. Beach Sweep, a day designated to clean up the Lake Pontchartrain Basin area, will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Now in its 30th year, LPBF’s Beach Sweep is held in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy. Hundreds of volunteers around the Lake Pontchartrain watershed will assist in cleaning up areas that drain into the lake, removing thousands of pounds of debris from our natural area.

This year, refuge staff will be hosting two locations for the annual LPBF Beach Sweep; one clean-up location at Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge in Lacombe, LA and another clean-up location at Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in New Orleans East, LA. Refuge staff will host a crew of 30 volunteers at each location from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. To say thank you to the Beach Sweep volunteers, the Friends and LPBF, will host a picnic lunch for the participants at each clean-up location.

Big Branch Marsh NWR Beach Sweep will target litter clean up along Lake Road. Lake Road, is the most visited public use site on any of the nine refuges in Southeast Louisiana. Nearly 100,000 visitors use this area annually for the free boat launch, fishing, recreational crabbing, hiking and wildlife observation opportunities.

Bayou Sauvage NWR Beach Sweep will be held along Crabbing Bridge Road, another high visitation site on the Southeast Louisiana refuges. Crabbing Bridge Road is utilized primarily for fishing, recreational crabbing and wildlife observation. Debris picked up by volunteers at both locations will be recorded in Ocean Conservancy’s Clean Swell app and on data cards that catalog the types and amounts of trash collected.

Space is limited to 30 volunteers at each refuge location and will be filled fist come first serve. If you are available to participate in this event contact Supervisory Refuge Ranger Becky Larkins at (985) 882-2025 or rebecca_larkins@fws.gov
