MASTER GARDENERS OF GREATER NEW ORLEANS
Membership Meeting Announcement

Monday, July 29 - 6pm - 8pm
at the JP East Bank Regional Library , 4747 West Napoleon

James W. Beck, of the City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite & Rodent Control Board, will give the presentation "The Wildlife Outside of Doors." He will share his knowledge of the wildlife we encounter in our urban and suburban environments including amphibians, reptiles, birds, and insects. It will be a good opportunity to identify and learn about the creatures, some seen and some unseen, that surround us in our daily lives.

James Beck grew up in Metairie. His interest in wildlife and biology began at the age of eight when he started birding. An interest in amphibians and reptiles followed shortly thereafter and a few years later, in 1991 at the age of 13, he became a youth volunteer at the Audubon Zoo where he was introduced to the world of spiders and insects. He moved Lafayette Parish in late 2001 and served as the General Curator of the Zoo of Acadiana until 2006. From there it was onto the USGS National Wetlands Research Center working predominately on amphibian and bird ecology as well as vegetation sampling. Since moving back to the New Orleans area in 2014 his diverse work has ranged from conducting bird, amphibian, and reptile surveys to vegetation sampling in forested plots. He currently works for the City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite & Rodent Control Board monitoring and surveying mosquito populations and species diversity via collection traps and identifying all species collected from the field.
