Understanding Arlington’s tree canopy through community science: i-Tree Canopy

Friday, June 03 2022

Are you interested in helping understand the state of your community’s tree canopy from the comfort of your own home? Tree canopy can be analyzed by anyone! The U.S. Forest service and its partners developed a statistics-based program to help understand the composition of a community’s tree canopy through analyzing random survey points. It uses the latest imagery and visual interpretation to create statistical analysis of tree canopy in a community.

The more points one analyzes, the higher the accuracy, and the sky is the limit. A training will be provided to understand how to collect, analyze, and share the points. Volunteers will analyze points in the data set, and hand it off to another volunteer to create more points. The data sets will be checked for errors, and a report generated showing tree canopy and other land covers can be generated. This report can be a great benchmark to better understand our land use.

The project will focus on Arlington County, but the training will help anyone understand how to set this up.

A training will be held on June 3, from 1-2 PM on Microsoft Teams. The training will be recorded for those who cannot attend, and are still interested.
