Erwin Park - Gael Perdomo (Completed)

Completion Date: Sunday, April 26, 2026

Project Title: Gael's Trail Feature (40-Foot Wooden Skill Ramp)

Project Overview

This Eagle Scout Service Project, led by Gael Perdomo, focused on expanding the progressive skill-building infrastructure within the Erwin Park mountain bike trail network. The project involved the precision construction and installation of a dedicated 40-foot elevated wooden skill ramp. Engineered specifically to enhance the technical trail system, this feature provides an engaging, durable obstacle designed to help park visitors safely build bike-handling confidence and technical riding proficiency.

Execution & Trail Management Partnership

The project moved from initial planning to field deployment over a weekend window, starting on April 25, 2026, and reaching successful completion on April 26, 2026. Gael demonstrated strong project management by coordinating a volunteer workforce composed of 11 individuals, including 6 registered BSA youth members and supporting adult volunteers.

To optimize on-site efficiency, Gael pre-cut and pre-fabricated the core framing and timber elements off-site at home before transporting them to the park. During field installation, the volunteer team overcame heavy excavation challenges using manual post-hole diggers to anchor the foundational footings. Once the underlying posts and main structural frames were secured, the team cleanly fastened the riding deck slats to complete the 40-foot run. All field operations were synchronized under the authorized supervision of the DORBA trail management ecosystem.

Service Impact & Resource Valuation

The addition of this 40-foot technical ramp directly advances the park’s recreational capabilities by offering a permanent, high-impact asset to the local skills area. By sourcing direct material sponsorships, the project added significant capital value to the trail system's community assets at no cost to the trail management organization. The final recorded resource valuation and economic metrics are detailed below:

Total Volunteer Force: 11 Individuals

Total Labor Investment: 73.5 Service Hours (Includes design, off-site pre-cutting, and on-site assembly)

Direct Financial Contributions / Materials: $587.95 (Reflects $470.04 in construction timber and $117.91 in heavy-duty structural fastening screws fully donated by Home Depot)

Volunteer Labor Value ($33.00/hr): $2,425.50

Total Project Valuation: $3,013.45

Conclusion

Gael’s Trail Feature delivers a highly functional, expertly planned addition to Erwin Park's singletrack ecosystem. By pairing rigorous off-site pre-fabrication with dedicated volunteer leadership, Gael has provided a lasting technical asset that enriches the outdoor recreation experience for the entire McKinney riding community.
