Volunteer at Arbor Day: Outside Request

Saturday, January 26 2019

Update: Due to the impending bad weather on 1/19/19, this event has been rescheduled to 1/26/19.

8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. @ LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens, 4560 Essen Ln, Baton Rouge, LA 70809

This Burden Center event is pre-approved for LMNGBR volunteer hours.

We provide volunteers every year for this tree planting event which is helping to replace the forest that was flattened by shear winds during Gustav. Each year they plant a new sector. Kids love this event!

To sign up to volunteer, e-mail John Hough at jedgarhough@gmail.com or call his mobile at 225-907-6016. John is a founding member of LMNGBR.

Volunteers are needed to guide families through the tree planting process: 1) pick a native tree 2) get a wheelbarrow and shovel 3) find a ground tag that matches your tree tag for the planting location predetermined by the landscape architect 4) dig the hole - usually the kids don't want help 5) explain how to properly plant the tree 6) help them return the equipment 7) bring the tree tag number and show the family where to retrieve a card with the GPS coordinates for their tree so they can come back later and see how it has grown.

Pro tips:

- Ask John Hough or Ken Bosso what the trees are when you get there, because people will ask what they are planting and the trees have no leaves.

- Don't forget your Master Naturalist name tag!
