LMNGBR Field Trip: Protecting the Power Grid and Evening Sky and Moon Viewing

Friday, January 25 2019

7:30 pm to 8:30 pm: Protecting the Power Grid There are several different ways entire sections of our nation’s Grid can be damaged or destroyed. Indeed, it’s happened before…at least on a small scale. What about a large-scale event? Many believe it’s a matter of when, not if. Are we prepared? [No admission fee. For ages fourteen and older.]

8:30 pm to 10:00 pm: Evening Sky Viewing Weather permitting, viewing through one or more telescopes will take place. During this time the waning gibbous Moon will be below the horizon. Please keep headlights off while parking and leaving, and drive slowly! [No admission fee. For all ages.]

Karen Westphal recommends the "Night Sky" app for your mobile phone - a planetarium in your pocket!

Location: Highland Road Park Observatory -- 13800 Highland Rd, Baton Rouge, LA 70810

Parking:

The main parking area is on HRPO grounds. Please pull in to a parking slot. Please do not park on a curve or alongside piping; this endangers both your vehicle and vehicles trying to pass. Please do not drive faster than 15kph (or 10mph) on HRPO grounds. If driving on HRPO grounds after sunset, please turn off your headlights. If your car does not allow you to turn off your headlights, please park as far away from the main building as possible.

The secondary parking area (for large events) is a few meters west next to the drone course. Visitors can walk up the hill from that area.
